BEYOND THE FRAME: FILM APPRECIATION AND CINEMATIC SPACE IN MALAYSIA / MERENTASI FIGURA: APRESIASI FILEM DAN RUANG SINEMATIK DI MALAYSIA
This panel traces the history of key film collectives in Malaysia. Championing film appreciation, they provide the space to showcase a variety of issues as featured in documentaries, experimental and narrative films. In a landscape of diminishing opportunities for such discussions, this is crucial for young and independent filmmakers finding their way in the industry. Featuring curators from four different film collectives (Kelab Seni Filem Malaysia, Malaysian Shorts, Freedom Film Network and Filemmakers Anonymous), the session considers the impact of such spaces in Malaysian cinema, and their role in elevating stories and their tellers to the next level.
Amir Muhammad (Malaysian Shorts)
Brenda Danker (Freedom Film Network)
Effa Desa (Filemmakers Anonymous)
Wong Tuck Cheong (Kelab Seni Filem Malaysia)
SCRIPT TO SCREEN: PREBET SAPU WITH MUZZAMER RAHMAN / DARI NASKAH KE LAYAR PERAK: PREBET SAPU DAN MUZZAMAR RAHMAN
This session tracks the timeline of Prebet Sapu, Muzzamer Rahman’s first film. Recently selected as Malaysia’s official submission to the 94th Academy Awards in the Best International Feature category, it is a gritty look at life in Kuala Lumpur, as a young man aims to make ends meet by becoming an illegal e-hailing driver. In connecting the dots, the director will discuss the process of creating the film, from its humble origins all the way through to its showcase in Malaysian cinemas in December 2021.
